Anti-Insect DEET

Anti-Insect with DEET

Care Plus® DEET is the strongest insect-repellent remedy for the skin. The active ingredient is effective against various disease transmitters, like (malaria) mosquitoes and ticks. DEET offers up to 10 hours of protection from stings and bites. The use of DEET is advised for destinations where there is a risk of malaria, dengue, zika, chikungunya, yellow fever and West Nile virus. DEET is suitable for all destinations, far away and closer to home. The DEET percentage determines the duration of action.

The active ingredient DEET is effective against stinging insects and ticks. DEET is most effective against (tropical) mosquitoes and ticks. The percentage determines the duration of action.

What is DEET?

DEET is the abbreviation for N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide. The name N,N,-diethyl-m-toluamide has recently been replaced by N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide, but you will come across both names. Care Plus® DEET is available in concentrations of 50% lotion and spray, 40% spray and 30% spray and gel.

One package of 60 ml is sufficient for 1 person for 2 to 3 weeks of daily use according to the instructions. Care Plus® advises a DEET percentage between 30% and 50%. An insect-repellent remedy with a DEET percentage below 30% is not effective enough and a percentage above 50% has no added value. For adequate protection it is important that Care Plus® DEET is applied to all exposed skin.

‘Best in Test’ by the Consumer Association

Care Plus® DEET lotion was rated ‘GOOD’ by the German Stiftung Consumer Test in 2004. Care Plus® DEET gel was ‘Best in Test’ in 2005 by the Dutch Consumer Association.

FAQs about DEET

DEET (abbreviation for N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) is an insect repellent organic compound with chemical formula C12H17NO. It is designed to be applied on the skin or on clothes and is mainly used for protection against insect bites. DEET offers protection in particular against tick bites that can cause Lyme disease and mosquito bites that can cause dengue virus, zika, West Nile fever and malaria. It is available as a gel, lotion and spray and impregnated products like mosquito nets and socks.

DEET is a yellow-green liquid and a solvent that can affect various fabrics including certain plastics, viscose, elastane and leather. It does not affect natural fibres like cotton and wool, and has no effect on nylon.

How do you use Care Plus®Anti-Insect with DEET?

We advise covering the skin with clothes as much as possible. Preferably wear long trousers and a long-sleeved shirt. For optimal protection against bites and stings, we advise to apply Care Plus® Anti-Insect DEET to all exposed skin. Apply the insect repellent evenly with the palm of your hand. For protection of the face, apply a small amount of the product with your fingers. Wash your hands afterwards and apply to the back of your hands. Always keep the inside of your hands free from DEET with regard to consuming food or drinks. In case of children, do not apply the insect repellent to body parts that can easily come into contact with the eyes or mouth, like hands and forearms. For use during the day, apply the insect repellent ten minutes before exposure to direct sunlight. In combination with a sunscreen, apply the sunscreen 30 minutes before exposure to direct sunlight. Apply the insect repellent 20 minutes later (and 10 minutes before exposure to sunlight). Wash treated parts of the skin properly with soap when protection is no longer needed or if side effects have occurred.

Which variety should I use?

There are several varieties of Anti-Insect with DEET of 30% to 50%. A higher percentage guarantees longer protection. Anti-Insect Natural without DEET is also available. The selection guide below can help you to choose the right variety.

Is Anti-Insect DEET safe for children?

Young children explore to get to know their environment. They have a tendency to put things in their mouth. Since 2012, Care Plus® has added the odourless, bitter ingredient Bitrex® to all DEET products. This reduces the risk of children swallowing the mosquito-repellent product.

Can I use this product when pregnant or breastfeeding?

Vulnarable grous, like pregnant women, women who breastfeed and children under 13 years can not use DEET. Care Plus® Anti-Insect Natural, based on lemon eucalyptus extract (Citriodiol), can be used on children from 3 months. Consult a doctor if you want to use Care Plus® Anti-Insect Natural during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

How do I apply Care Plus® Anti-Insect with DEET?

Make sure the Anti-Insect DEET does not come into contact with damaged skin (wounds, skin burns), eyes, nose, nostrils, lips and mucosal lining. Do not apply the mosquito repellent under clothes or in places where the skin folds, like elbows and the backs of the knees. In case of children, avoid using Anti-Insect DEET in places where the skin can easily get into contact with the eyes and mouth, like the hands and forearms.

How does DEET work against mosquitoes and ticks?

The active ingredient DEET is the ideal mosquito repellent. Care Plus® has a wide range of effective mosquito-repellent products with DEET. Do you want to buy an effective mosquito repellent? Anti-Insect DEET is a strong remedy in our range for protection against common mosquitoes of the Culex genus and mosquitoes of the Aedes and Anopheles genus who cause the most diseases. DEET also protects against ticks.

How do you use Anti-Insect DEET in the sun?

Apply Anti-Insect DEET 10 minutes before exposure to direct sunlight. If you are using the mosquito repellent in combination with a sunscreen, apply the sunscreen first (30 minutes before exposure to sunlight). Apply the mosquito repellent 20 minutes after (10 minutes before exposure to sunlight). Your skin is now optimally protected.
