But which products really help against a bite and which are sheer nonsense and should we avoid spending money on?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Every year, new products come on the market. The manufacturers claim they protect against mosquitoes: apps and plugs that emit a high beeping sound and citronella scented bracelets to keep mosquitoes at bay. An enormous amount of money is spent every year on each and every product. And this year, again, an enormous amount of money will go down the drain, because you will still get bitten.

Citronella<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The shelves are stocked with them: products based on citronella that claim to protect against mosquitoes\u2019 bites. You have probably seen a citronella candle for on the table, in the garden, or on the patio. Unfortunately, these candles do not prevent you from getting bitten. Mosquitoes approach the heat, carbon dioxide and humidity emitted by a burning candle. Three things mosquitoes love! And the smell of citronella? Mosquitoes quickly get used to it.<\/p>\n

Not only the candles are popular. Nowadays, the stores are full of bracelets that are meant to keep mosquitoes at bay. These coloured bracelets also contain citronella, and are intended to protect you against mosquitoes for a few hours. A study<\/a> by the New England Journal of Medicine has shown that citronella-based products, including bracelets, keep mosquitoes at bay for a maximum period of 20 minutes. In addition, only the part where the scent of citronella is located is protected for a short time. The rest of your body is free of citronella and therefore a great place for the mosquito to land. These bracelets will unfortunately not give you the right protection against mosquitoes and are therefore a waste of money.

Ultrasonic sound<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Creators of apps, devices and plugs that emit an ultrasonic sound that should keep mosquitoes away are also misleading the consumer. Unfortunately, these remedies also don’t help prevent mosquito bites.<\/p>\n

According to the makers, the high frequency of the noise would be so annoying to mosquitoes that they stay away. However, research<\/a> has shown that the high frequency does not keep mosquitoes at a distance and is therefore nonsense. Ultrasonic sound, on the other hand, can have an effect on small mammals, such as rodents, bats and moles, but not on insects. Elk jaar worden er miljoenen euro’s uitgegeven aan muggenwerende middelen die niet werken. Op dit moment hoeven we ons in Nederland nog geen zorgen te maken voor muggen die dodelijke infectieziekten overdragen, maar in landen waar dit wel het geval is, is het verkopen van deze middelen niet alleen geldklopperij, maar ook nog eens levensgevaarlijk. Wel kun je in veel zuidelijke landen van Europa het westnijlvirus krijgen van een besmette mug. Zorg dat je te allen tijde op de goede manier beschermd bent tegen muggen, om de kans op een infectieziekte te voorkomen.<\/p>\n

Wat werkt dan wel?<\/h3>\n

Nu we weten waar we ons geld beter niet aan kunnen uitgeven, is het goed om te weten wat w\u00e9l helpt. Hieronder hebben we een lijstje met preventieve maatregelen die je kunt nemen:<\/p>\n

\u2022 Bestrijd de bron<\/strong>
Je kunt het beste beginnen met het weghalen van de bron, ofwel de broedplaatsen van muggen. Dit zijn plasjes stilstaand water, denk aan emmers, dakgoten en plantenpotten waar een laagje water in zit. Dit zijn d\u00e9 plekken waar muggen graag broeden. Zorg dat deze plasjes rondom je huis er niet zijn.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Leg barri\u00e8res aan
<\/strong>Zorg ervoor dat muggen geen kans krijgen om je huis binnen te komen. Doe dit door horren op ramen en deuren te plaatsen.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Klamboe<\/strong>
Mocht je nu toch last hebben van muggen in huis, slaap onder een klamboe!<\/p>\n

\u2022 Draag bedekkende kleding<\/strong>
Waarschijnlijk niet het eerste wat je voorkeur heeft tijdens warmere dagen, maar wel een middel wat ervoor zorgt dat muggen niet bij je huid kunnen komen.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Bedek de huid met een insectwerend middel<\/strong>
Smeer de onbedekte huid in met een middel op basis van lemon-eucalyptus of DEET. Dit zijn bewezen middelen die je wel beschermen tegen een beet. Met de Anti-Insect Natural<\/a> ben je tot 6 uur beschermd tegen muggen, met DEET<\/a> tot wel 10 uur.<\/p>\n
