Blisters

What are blisters?

Blisters cause pain and discomfort and can ruin a day out, a hike or a city trip. Blisters are cavities with moisture that form on the outer layer of the skin. They can occur on different parts of the body such as feet, hands or other places on the body that experience a lot of friction. It is important to treat a blister properly to reduce the risk of infection.

How do blisters arise?

Blisters occur when a part of the skin is subjected to a lot of friction, for example by a shoe or sock rubbing against the skin, or as a result of heat, humidity or a combination of these factors. The body creates the blister to protect the wound from further friction or pressure. When too much pressure or friction is applied to the skin, the top layer gets damaged and moisture accumulates.

Prevent blisters

Preventing blisters is the key to comfort. With these simple tips, you can significantly reduce the risk of blisters:

  • Choose appropriate footwear. Wear well-fitting shoes that provide adequate support and cushioning. Avoid tight or ill-fitting shoes that can cause friction and pressure points.
  • Use moisture-wicking socks. These types of socks help your feet stay dry by drawing away sweat and moisture, as moist skin is more prone to developing blisters. Therefore, wearing this type of sock can reduce the risk of blisters.
  • Apply lubricants or powders. To reduce friction, you can apply a thin layer of lubricant, such as petroleum jelly or special anti-blister products, to areas prone to blisters. Alternatively, using talcum powder or anti-friction powders can help keep your skin dry and prevent excess moisture.
  • Use a blister plaster. On the spot where you are more likely to get a blister, for example on your heels, you can stick a blister plaster preventively. This will provide cushioning when friction occurs.

Treating blisters

Have you developed a blister despite preventive measures? Then it is important to treat it well to reduce the risk of infection. A blister may burst if pressure or friction is not relieved. You then have an open wound that can easily become infected. Blistering plasters reduce pressure and pain and can prevent infection. Our Care Plus® Blister Plasters come in a Duo Pack and Ultimate variant.
